Spin-Wave Dynamics and Symmetry Breaking in an Artificial Spin Ice

Artificial spin ices are periodic arrangements of interacting nanomagnets which allow investigating emergent phenomena in the presence geometric frustration. Recently, it has been shown that artificial can be used as building blocks for creating functional materials, such magnonic crystals. We investigate magnetization dynamics a system exhibiting anisotropic magnetostatic interactions owing to locally broken structural inversion symmetry. find rich spin-wave spectrum and its evolution an external magnetic field. determine individual modes, from up larger arrays, highlighting role symmetry breaking defining mode profiles. Moreover, we demonstrate spectra exhibit signatures long-range system. These results contribute understanding beyond kagome square ice geometries relevant realization reconfigurable crystals based on ices.
